Cake Pops.... so simple, yet so amazingly, well, amazing! These little guys are just as delicious as they are adorable and they are popping up everywhere. Weddings, birthdays, baby showers, you name it...cake pops are all the rage right now. Forget about the wedges, 80's attire, every-color-of-the-rainbow jeans. In the baking world, Cake Pops are pretty much the creme de la creme. If you want to get really into it a great website for ideas is Bakerella. This woman literally appears to be able to make cake pops into almost anything. I have not practiced this art enough to be able to create the adorable and incredible little balls of joy that this woman has mastered, but one can only aspire to be more, right? So here is my first attempt at the infamous "Cake Pop" made especially for a friend's baby shower. Oh and the adorable tissue paper clouds....yep, you guessed it. {Pinterest} Where else? So how do you make these little suckers (literally)?
Things you will need:
Cake mix
Icing
Lollipop sticks
Candy Melts
Whatever you would like to use to decorate (sprinkles, different colored chocolate, edible paint, etc.)
Foam
The how to's:
1. Bake the cake as directed on the box
2. Once your cake has really cooled, crumble it into a mixing bowl
3. Add about 1 cup of icing to mixing bowl - mix cake and icing together
4. Roll the mixture into 1 to 1.5" balls with your hands. If you roll more of a football shape--try a melon-baller
5. Melt a small amount of the chocolate melts in the microwave as directed on the bag
6. Dip lollipop stick in chocolate and insert about half way into the cake ball
7. Cool these in the fridge for a few minutes - make sure the chocolate is nice and solid
8. Melt the rest of your candy melts, adding food coloring if you want to get real fancy. This is the only difficult part. I found that the chocolate alone was too thick and would pull the cake balls right off the stick. After a few attempts I thinned the chocolate with vegetable oil, one tablespoon at a time (Vegetable shortening will work too) until it had the desired consistency. Not too thin, you don't want the chocolate dripping right off!
9. Dip the cake balls into the chocolate and tap the excess chocolate, turning the pop in a circular motion until there are few drips remaining. Keep the pop in a fairly upright position so it does not fall off into the chocolate.
10. Stick your pop into the foam to cool and harden.
